A) Cyberbullying and Social Media Resources

This module pertains to the issue of cyberbullying. 

 

In part A) we look at online resources to fight cyberbullying. 

 

Pinterest allows users to create a web resource through "Pin"ing various images from different websites. Each pinned image is a link to the source.

 

The images pinned on my Pinterest page offer various types and sources of information in regards to cyberbullying, and could potentially help students in dealing with such issues.

B) Strategies for Addressing Digital Citizenship and/or Cyberbullying

In part B) we look at real-world strategies for mitigating the effects of cyberbullying in the classroom, especially in context of secondary education.

 

1. In the classroom, I would start a discussion about the permanent nature of the internet; every thing a student uploads, posts, tweets, blogs, or whatever, has potential to harm the student because it is being shared with virtually every person connected to the web. This is because the overwhelming majority of students in secondary school are active participants in their online communities. The Mukwonago Area School District website has an image linked to my Pinterest which says, "Nothing EVER goes away once it's posted online."  This discussion examines the potential for massive spread of one person's secrets and would be nicely paired with the Telephone game.

I feel it is important for students to be properly informed about the true extent of the internet. It provides them with the foundation needed to become ethical digital citizens and stand up to cyberbullying.

 

2. Once the students have an understanding of the far-reaching implications of their actions, it may be prudent to illustrate the concept by showing them a quick video. In my Pin Board, a link to a video titled, "THE CYBER BULYING VIRUS" is posted. This 4 minute video demonstrates how quickly cyberbullying spreads and reinforces the message in part 1.

3. Next, I would show them the statistics regarding cyberbullying. An article by edudemic titled, "The Current State of Bullying in Schools" is linked on my Pinterest page. It looks at what percentage of typical students in secodary schools experience and participate in cyberbullying.

Understanding the statisics in this situation helps students who are unable to come forward because they fear being the minority. Once they realize this is happening to others, they may be less reluctant to step forward.

 

4. Finally, I would conclude with some general tips on how to prevent further cyberbullying. An image posted on my Pin Board illustrates 9 simple methods to stop cyberbullying. Tips such as, "don't retaliate", and "don't be a bystander", provide students with effective measures against the spread of cyberbullying.

I would direct my students to my Pin Board titled called "Cyberbully" and tell them they may find some useful information on there in regards to ethical digital citizenship.
